Make Skinny Jeans Yourself from Regular Jeans

I’ve had these maternity jeans since I was pregnant with Ronen, but I never wore them with him because they came up a bit too high for my liking. I noticed I don’t have any maternity skinny jeans but plenty of regular ones. And since these weren’t getting used anyway, I figured I’d go ahead and make skinny jeans from them!

This is a super easy sewing project so if you have any pants or jeans you’d like to convert for whatever reason, follow along!

How to Make Skinny Jeans

First, you turn your jeans inside out. Put them on. Check which seam has the top-stitch. Mine was on the inseam so I pinned along the outer seam. Put pins along where you would like the skinny jeans to fit. Safety pins would be better so you’re not getting stabbed while pulling them off, like me.

Take them off and sew along the line of pins, taking them out as you go. Cut off the excess, leaving 1-2 inches in case the fit isn’t quite right.

Try them on to check fit. If needed, pin and sew again.

If the fit is good, trim some more off if you want. I left about 1 inch in case I gain any more weight this pregnancy and need to take them out a bit. Then sew a zig-zag stitch along the edge where you sewed.

Turn them right-side-out and try on your new skinny jeans!

Here’s the outer seam. You can’t even tell that they weren’t made like this! No more too-short jeans!

  1. Your instructions were great. I’ve been struggling as to how to do it. But you made it clear and easy. Thank you!

  2. I truly appreciate this post. I’ve been looking everywhere for this! Thank goodness I found it on Bing. You’ve made my day! Thanks again

  3. This looks super easy so I’m going to try it. I’ve got 2 pair I like how they fit in the waist and bum area. Just not the legs. Any ideas how to make low rise jeans from high waisted? That would be awesome. Thanks

    1. I’m really not sure about that one. There are tutorials for making maternity pants out of jeans so maybe you could do that except add a denim waistband?

  4. I’ve been doing that for years. I’m all by myself so I have no one to help me with the pins. Can’t bend over and fit them on the lower part of the pants. So now I determine the width of the cuffs and then take a yard stick from the part where I can reach with pins to the cuff and draw a line with a pencil. Then I sew from waist to cuff. Sometimes I do it with a basting stitch so I can test before doing the real stitching.
