Lately, I’ve really been cracking down on setting up some kind of a schedule for Garreth’s homeschooling. I have been making lots of activities for him to do throughout the day to limit screen time. The latest one I made were these DIY foam lacing cards. I like to keep them in a Ziploc bag so they are a portable busy bag.
Garreth enjoyed watching me make them while he was working on other things! Keep reading to make some for your little one, too!

DIY Foam Lacing Cards
Supplies:
Sheets of foam paper or cardstock
Toothpicks or Buttons
Shoestrings or any string and tape
Scissors
Optional: cookie cutters for shapes
I loved using this 4×6 inch foam paper from Dollar Tree! Each sheet fits two cookie cutter shapes perfectly and all I had to do was press down! No tracing required! Or just freehand some shapes on there.
The impressions lasted just long enough for me to cut out the shapes.
Next, I punched holes along the edges of all of the shapes. Garreth was very mad at me for this. He said I was breaking them and tried to hide them from me so I wouldn’t do any more!
And then he was attempting to fix them while I finished.
Next, cut the toothpicks in half and cut the ends off.
Cut your string to the length you need to lace all the way through one shape and tie a double knot around one of the toothpick pieces.
This is to keep the string from being pulled all the way through the holes. You can also use buttons tied to the string.
Wrap a small piece of tape around the other end of the string, otherwise, it will be hard to get through the holes and will come unraveled. You can also use shoestrings.
I plan on using them for at home, in the car, and during church to keep him busy and hopefully quiet.
You probably don’t need this many, this is just all the shapes he insisted I cut out.

Definitely something I will be doing with my kids! You make it look super easy! I would love to homeschool but we live off my salary so quitting my job to stay at home would not work, lol. Until then, I’ll squeeze in extra activities while they are young 🙂
It would have been easier if I waited until the kids went to bed to make them lol. I wish I would have done more activities when he was younger. Instead, I waited until he was almost 5 🙁
These are really great! I love how simple they are to make, store, and play with! Great tool for motor skills and for keeping kids occupied with a quiet activity that still allows them to be creative.
