DIY Diffuser Necklace for Essential Oils

For a long time, I wanted to buy one of those metal diffuser necklaces for essential oils with the leather soaker pads in the center. I wanted to be able to wear my oils without actually applying them to myself all the time. But, I never wanted to spend the money on one.

A while back, I learned that clay soaks up essential oils and you can use it as pendants to make a DIY diffuser necklace!

 Supplies:

Air dry clay

Cord for necklace

Toothpick or clay tools

Old jewelry or stamps

Essential oils: I suggest using Eden’s Garden but if you’re strapped, these would be okay, too:

Mold a small piece of clay (I just used my hands) to your desired shape and press your jewelry or stamp into it.

Roll up an even smaller ball of clay for a bead. This will be part of the clasp for the necklace.

Use the toothpick or a small tool to make holes for the cording. The pendant hole should be wide enough to fit two strands through. And one strand for the bead.

Leave them somewhere to dry for a couple of days. If you have a different type of clay, follow those directions.

Once dry, they will look chalky. That will go away after a few uses.

Cut the cording to your desired length, adding a few inches for the clasp.

Put both ends through the pendant and pull them through the loop at the other end.

Pull one end through the bead and tie a double knot back at the cord.

On the other end, make a loop big enough to slip over the bead easily and tie a double knot.

Place one drop of your essential oil of choice on the stamped side. Rub it around so the clay absorbs it evenly.

Here is what the clasp looks like, and the pendant.

I put Peace and Calming on Garreth’s necklace. He loves to randomly smell it, so it’s a great oil for him!

The pendant will have a more natural color like this after a few wears.

A Couple Tips:

Don’t get your pendant wet! The water breaks it down and mine has broken immediately while doing the dishes!

After applying the essential oil, I like to leave mine sitting for a couple of minutes before I put it on so that it won’t stain my clothes.

Have you ever made a DIY diffuser necklace? What type? Let me know in the comments!
